Memory Disorders: Next Wednesday, November 18th from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. the Banner Sun Health Research Institute will host a free community lecture on methods to identify memory disorders. The free event takes place in the Morin Auditorium at Banner Boswell Medical Center, 10515 W. Santa Fe Dr., Sun City. Guest speaker will be Dr. Edward Zamrini, a neurologist with expertise in cognitive and geriatric neurology. He will discuss why Alzheimer’s disease is not part of normal changes in memory and how to tell the difference between the two. Seating is limited. Diabetes Awareness:The Sun Health Center for Health and Wellbeing will host a Diabetes Awareness Open House from 8:30 am to 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, November 19thlocated at 14719 W. This free community event will offer health screenings, healthy cooking demonstrations and samples, exercise tips and raffle prizes, along with educational materials and community resources, for people with diabetes, pre-diabetics and their family members. Did you know? There’s an estimated 177,000 children being taken care of by their grandparents or other extended family members in Arizona according to Arizona Grandparent Ambassadors, a support network for grandparents raising grandchildren. The reasons why a grandparent or family member may take over care of a child are most often because of substance abuse, mental illness, incarceration or financial difficulties. Nearly forty percent of children are being raised by their grandparents in Arizona.
It’s no surprise that aging in long-term senior care facilities sometimes has negative annotations; and with good reason. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about eighty percent of older adults have at least one chronic health condition, which can lead to high levels of depression.
